LT230 – Rebuild

Whilst we had the opportunity to, I decided to rebuild the LT230 transfer box that I got with the autobox. I had suspected this was in good condition as it’s had an easy life behind an autobox, however it’s best to check and do it over to be sure. I also wanted to change the rear output housing for one with the speedo drive setup needed for a Defender speedo drive (the Disco 2 ECU gets the speed information from ABS sensors).

There are a plethora of how to’s and manuals online. I’m following the standard Land Rover LT230 manual.

It breaks down into 3 main parts.

The main casing:

The front output housing:

The rear output housing:

Once you’ve split all the pieces it’s on to cleaning and then reconstruction. I’ve held off on doing this part of the work until I sourced all the parts needed.

Splitting it apart was relatively easy (if a little dirty), and only a selection of tools needed to complete this stage. I can honestly suggest getting lots of rags/cardboard to strip it down on.
