Autobox, the beginning…

So we have decided to fit an autobox to the 110, on the basis that the majority of driving we do is motorway or around town, and the clutch is starting to become a pain. Having already swapped out the gearbox once trying to resolve issues, and having got negligable improvement, we felt this was a good point to swap it out.

We managed to source a good condition ZF 4HP22 from a member of our local Land Rover club which came out of their Discovery 2 TD5. They decided to split their Discovery after the flex plate snapped. We were able to get the 1.2 ratio transferbox also, which between that and the autobox should give a noticeable improvement on MPG particularly on the motorway as well as smoother and easier driving all round.

In the end we acquired the autobox, transferbox, torque converter, gear shifter, gear shifter trim, position switch and some cabling bits. This leaves us with a reasonable sized list of parts left to buy, which we’re slowly getting as and when funs allow. We need an ECU for the autobox, a new flexplate, oil cooler + pipes, and some cabling.

Needing to source the parts and not having an infinite supply of money has given me the opportunity to strip the transferbox and rebuild it. Once this goes in we should be good for another 100k 🙂
